Ramona Smith, a 31-year-old teacher from Houston, won the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking competition. She is an incredible speaker and person who has succeeded in life despite various setbacks. And Dubai Scholars was fortunate enough to see her in real life! She graced the stage with her speaking… truly phenomenal… The afternoon was started by our head girl and head boy welcoming Ms Ramona Smith to Dubai Scholars Private School. |
She shared with us her story, how she dropped out of university 4 times until she found her true calling after she had her baby, how she traveled across America to California. Not only that but she also engaged the crowd with activities like singing along to “Peanut Butter Mondays”. There was also a session where students were asked what their dream job was, and enthusiastic global citizens answered confidently. Aparaditya Singh Rathore, a boy in Year 11, replied saying, “I want to end world poverty and hunger” and everyone gave him a huge round of applause. |
She also gave us tips on how to be a more confident speaker and encouraged us to also be speakers like her by joining the toastmaster's gavel club.
Moreover, Ms Smith was everything we imagined her to be, graceful, kind, encouraging, warm and of course, inspirational. The afternoon was concluded by our deputy head boy and deputy head girl thank Ms Ramona for her presence and followed by a bouquet handed out to her by Ms Verma- our principal. |
